Artist Biography

Composer, producer and performer JEF STOTT
has been deftly navigating the realms of world fusion music for nearly two decades, where he has consistently been at the forefront of the International Global Bass movement.
His sound is a conscious blend of the best in global bass culture which simultaneously reaches back to ancient traditions while pushing the future of music forward.
Jef has released over a dozen full length albums, several singles and remixes on Six Degrees Records and various other labels and has had many placements and commissions in major film and television, video games and multimedia projects.
An in demand performer, Jef Stott has embarked on several successful world tours that have taken him to festivals and club appearances in Asia, North America and Europe often sharing festival stages with the likes of contemporaries Thievery Corporation, Nickodemus, Gaudi, Makyo, Cheb I Sabbah, Beats Antique, David Starfire, Bobby Friction, FreQ Nasty, Janaka Selecta, Dub Gabriel, Kush Arora among others.
Jef Stott’s DJ sets bring a sense of tribal community to the dance floor with dynamic live instrumentation and top shelf musicality from guest performers interplaying with original tracks and live remixes. The arc of his performances can range from the most delicate acoustic and ambient moments to the chakra blasting intensity of peak hour sonic bliss. He is a regular performer at Ecstatic Dance events around the world and is intuitively sensitive to the collective emotion of a moving dance floor.
Festival appearances include Symbiosis Pyramid Eclipse, Harmony Festival, Earthdance, Beloved, Outside Lands, Source Festival, Sea of Dreams, Green Festival, Joshua Tree Music Festival, Shambala Music Festival and many large clubs and conferences around the world. Jef was musical director for the Hookahdome (premiere Burning Man soundcamp) and main DJ for their numerous large scale events on and off the Playa.
Jef is a highly accomplished lifelong multi-instrumentalist, adding a live performance element to his live shows with many instruments ranging from Arabic string and percussion instruments to guitars, bass drums and live electronics. Jef has lead several live ensembles on stage throughout his career.

 

As a trained anthropologist, Jef Stott has made an in depth academic study of the instruments of the Middle East with master teachers including Hamza el Din, Omar Faruk Tekbilek among others. Jef often collaborates and performs with master musicians and dancers from the Middle East, Northern Africa, the Balkans and India as well as top shelf fusion artists from the West Coast.
As a producer and composer, he has released over 10 full length albums of his own work as well as producing, performing and writing for  Stellamara, Lumin, MC RAI and Qadim as well as many remixes including Azam Ali, Natasha Atlas, David Starfire, Gaudi, Adham Shaikh, Akara, Cemali, Atash, among others. His work has been released on several major labels including Universal, EMI, Six Degrees, Hearts of Space, Triloka and City of Tribes. He writes regularly for network and cable television, stage, video game and feature film.
He has recently completed a Masters Degree in Interactive Media. His thesis project The Subtle Body is a multimedia interactive installation and research project that uses the electromagnetic energy from the human brain and body to control audio and visual media. Jef also teaches audio production on a regular basis from his studio and at several educational facilities throughout the Bay Area. Jef is also a dedicated music educator who has taught hundreds of classes on audio production in a variety of classroom and online settings in numerous community centers and studios through out North America.
Jef is also an accomplished and sought after educator teaching Ableton Live, audio production, mixing and mastering in various institutions through out the world.

He is also the founder, producer and host of the video documentary series World is Sound, a travel series about music in which Jef travels the globe exploring the worlds musical culture through interviews and profiles of musical artists in far flung locations.
